Our mission is to foster collaboration and support the Art, Design, and Visual Studies Department's curriculum by providing hands-on resources for art students, artists, and the University community. The Barbara D. Goodman Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Archbishop Alemany Library.

A survey of contemporary art through the lens of The Last Tuesday Group, a collective of Bay Area artists.

For more than a decade, a quiet experiment has been unfolding in an old Palo Alto school, where a warren of former classrooms has become a working community of artists. Selected through a peer-juried process, they are given something increasingly rare in the Bay Area: affordable, long-term studio space. Somewhere along the way, the experiment became social, relational. Artists opened their doors, inviting the public in through workshops, exhibitions and programs. A few of them started gathering around a table, sharing work, food and wine, ideas and opportunities. This became The Last Tuesday Group and they began inviting artists, curators and gallerists in, sparking new conversations and connections.
Held / Together is the inaugural exhibit of this exchange becoming visible, ideas shared, influences absorbed and individual practices strengthened by a generous artistic community.
In this spirit of generosity and exchange, we invite you into the conversation. Step inside Tara de la Garza’s meditation booth, become entangled in Robin Mullery’s web of wire and words and marvel at the individual leaves of Charlotta Hauksdottir’s reconstructed natural world. Trace the topography of the human body with Jaya Griscom’s weavings. Compose a layered variation of self with Martha Sakellariou. Rearrange familiar text with Elizabeth Bennett and trace the imprint of hair, absence and memory with Adrienne Defendi. In Cynthia Brannvall’s sculptural forms, feminine ancestral presences are summoned, while Nasim Moghadam explores the traces culture, memory and identity leave on the body. See the ecological world pushing back and reclaiming its ground in Harumo Sato’s paintings. And through the joyous collective act of song, Mel Day reminds us that sometimes connection is as simple, and as powerful, as raising our voices together.
Held / Together, proposes that community is not simply the context in which art is made, it is one of its most powerful material.
